If I have some kind of worker on a server, and a client that provides jobs to that worker, how might my server update the client (in my particular case, a web application) of job progress or completion?

In my limited experience thus far, I have only seen servers that "speak when spoken to", i.e., I could make a request of the server every X amount of time until the job reaches a terminal state. But that feels very inefficient. Ideally, the server would notify the client when a job was completed, but I do not know how this would work.
