Julie Roberts First Artist To Sign With Sun Records in 40 years

Legendary Memphis label Sun Records is about to break a forty-year drought of full-length album releases. After decades of being solely in the publishing business, Sun Records will release Julie Roberts' new album Good Wine And Bad Decisionson October 29. Red River/Sony RED will handle distribution.
Roberts has previously released two albums on Mercury Nashville, 2004's Julie Roberts and 2006's Men and Mascara, the former of which yielded the hit "Break Down Here." Nashville-based Make Noise Management CEO Josh Collum brought Roberts to Sun after working with the label for the last two years on increasing its film and TV sync business.
Sun Records vice president Collin Brace said that he has wanted to venture into new music since starting at the label in 2008, but nonetheless says that Roberts' signing does not constitute the beginning of a full-fledged label revival.
“It was one of those things where this was perfect time for us and she was what we needed as an artist. It was a perfect storm if you will,” Brace says. “We don’t have any plans of signing artists at all — that makes this whole thing so special.”
Roberts, who released her third album independently in 2011, began promotion for the album at the 2013 CMA Music Festival in Nashville, announcing a pre-sale campaign via PledgeMusic.
"We made a rule for ourselves," says Collum of the as-yet unfinished record. If we hear something, even late in the game, that knocks something off the table, then we owe it to the record and to Sun to chase that."
Though primarily recording in Nashville, Collum is considering honoring Sun's roots by recording a track in the Memphis studio of Sun founder Sam Phillips. “We’re trying to be in Nashville, but not necessarily of Nashville,” Collum says. “Music Row has a certain way of doing things and we really plan to do this in a genuine way that honors the Sun legacy.”
Though the label has not issued a full-length album in over four decades, Sun Records is famous for being the early label home of legends such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison Carl Perkins, Howlin Wolf, and Junior Parker.
