Until recently, the element carbon was believed to exhibit only two main allotropic forms, diamond and graphite. Research
in the US and Europe has now confirmed the existence of a third previously unknown form - buckminsterfullerene (<RM>C<INF>60</INF></RM>)
and its relatives, the fullerenes (<RM>C<INF>24</INF>, C<INF>28</INF>, C<INF>32</INF>, C<INF>70</INF> etc</RM>). The story
of fullerene chemistry, physics and materials science began in 1985, almost twenty years after the existence of a spherical
carbon cluster was first considered. In September 1985 a joint Sussex/Rice Universities team including Kroto, Heath, O'Brien,
Curl and Smalley used a powerful mass spectrometric technique to identify the C+<INF>60</INF> species, and proposed a spherical
structure and the name buckminsterfullerene. It was not, however, until Krätschmer and Huffman reported the isolation of
crystals of C<INF>60</INF> in 1990 that the closed cage structure of C<INF>60</INF> could be confirmed. The Fullerenes documents
the work leading up to 1990 and more recent developments in the field of fullerene research and will serve as an indispensible
reference tool for all workers in this area

This compendium of accounts reveals the unique perspectives of many scientists who made major contributions to the Nobel Prize-winning
discovery of C60 buckminsterfullerene but who have not previously published personal accounts. The introduction attempts to
provide a rational framework for understanding how this discovery came about and how firmly it rested on earlier technical
breakthroughs and how important were the contributions of researchers who were young students at the time. In addition to
these accounts, most of the key publications are also reprinted. More than anything else, this book gives an in-depth overview
of how important cross-disciplinary advances from laboratory synthesis, molecular spectroscopy, radioastronomy, stellar chemistry,
and cluster chemistry were in the discovery. Indeed, the story shows not only how major breakthroughs are often impossible
to predict but also that the discovery is a perfect example of the value of fundamental science and why it must continue to
be supported

This book is a stop-gap contribution to the science and technology of carbon plasmas and carbon vapors. It strives to cover
two strongly related fields : the molecular quantum theory of carbon plasmas and carbon nanostructures; and the molecular
and atomic spectroscopy of such plasmas and vapors. These two fields of research are strongly intertwined and thus reinforce
one another. Even though the use of carbon nanostructures is increasing by the day and their practical uses are emerging,
there is no modern review on carbon plasmas, especially from molecular theoretical and spectroscopic viewpoints. The importance
of the present book is therefore great from both educational and practical aspects. This review might be the first step towards
bringing such textbooks into existence for university education. Similarly, for applied and engineering works in carbon nanostructures,
the book provides a theoretical salient point for technologists in the field

This book is the first of its kind to reflect upon the intense and rapidly growing interest in open geodesic polyaromatic
molecules, specifically focusing on their synthesis and reactivity in metal binding reactions. The book broadly covers all
aspects related to the fullerene fragment chemistry: current synthetic techniques, description of the available members of
this new family (which has grown to more than two dozens members, with none being available commercially), molecular geometry
and trends in the solid state packing, as well as extensions into physical properties and new buckybowl-based molecules and
materials. It covers fundamental research related to a new class of hydrocarbons, namely open geodesic polyarenes that map
onto the surfaces of fullerenes (and referred to as fullerene fragments or buckybowls

IoN, Schottland. Zahlreiche Vorträge und Zeitschriftenpublikationen über das Thema Nanotechnologie in Architektur, I

"As you watch the conversation in Beyond Belief: Enlightenment 2.0, it might help to know about one of the sources that was
helpful to me in formulating the agenda, assembling the cast of characters, and setting the tone for the meeting. I quoted
this passage from Humanity: A Moral History of the Twentieth Century by Jonathan Glover (who directs the Centre of Medical
Law and Ethics at King's College, London): "Now we tend to see the Enlightenment view of human psychology as thin and mechanical,
and Enlightenment hopes of social progress through the spread of humanitarianism and the scientific outlook as naive ... One
of this book's aims is to replace the thin, mechanical psychology of the Enlightenment with something more complex, something
closer to reality ... another aim of the book is to defend the Enlightenment hope of a world that is more peaceful and humane,
the hope that by understanding more about ourselves we can do something to create a world with less misery. I have qualified
optimism that this hope is well founded ..." I say Amen to that. If Enlightenment 1.0 took a thin and mechanical view of human
nature and psychology, I think Enlightenment 2.0 can offer a much 'thicker' and cognitively richer account - less naive and
also, perhaps, less hubristic. If there's one thing we've learned - particularly from cognitive neuroscience - it is that
we need to have some strategic humility about the hobby horses we are inclined to ride".--Website

"Just 40 years after a famous TIME magazine cover asked "Is God Dead?" the answer appears to be a resounding "No!" According
to a survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life in a recent issue of Foreign Policy magazine, "God is Winning". Religions
are increasingly a geopolitical force to be reckoned with. Fundamentalist movements - some violent in the extreme - are growing.
Science and religion are at odds in the classrooms and courtrooms. And a return to religious values is widely touted as an
antidote to the alleged decline in public morality. After two centuries, could this be twilight for the Enlightenment project
and the beginning of a new age of unreason? Will faith and dogma trump rational inquiry, or will it be possible to reconcile
religious and scientific worldviews? Can evolutionary biology, anthropology and neuroscience help us to better understand
how we construct beliefs, and experience empathy, fear and awe? Can science help us create a new rational narrative as poetic
and powerful as those that have traditionally sustained societies? Can we treat religion as a natural phenomenon? Can we be
good without God? And if not God, then what? This is a critical moment in the human situation, and The Science Network in
association with the Crick-Jacobs Center brought together an extraordinary group of scientists and philosophers to explore
answers to these questions".--Website
