I have the following rewrite condition and rule which is used to hide a directory within a url path:

RewriteCond %REQUEST_FILENAME !-d
RewriteCond %DOCUMENT_ROOT/_core/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.+?)/?$ _core/$1.php [L]

RewriteCond %DOCUMENT_ROOT/_landing/$1.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.+?)/?$ _landing/$1.php [L]

So any page that is within either _landing or _core directories will not show that folder. So my structure is:

index.php
_core/
 page-1.php
 page-2.php
_landing/
 cat-1.php

And it allows the url for cat-1.php to be:

mywebsite.com/cat-1.php (rather than mywebsite.com/_landing/cat-1.php)

The problem is that this works on a live server when the htaccess and folders are located within my public_html folder but not on my localhost setup on my Mac. It just results in a 404 Not Found.

My local site structure is as follows:

Macintosh HD / Users / xxxx / Documents / Websites / mywebsite / .htaccess
Macintosh HD / Users / xxxx / Documents / Websites / mywebsite / _landing / ..and so on

.htaccess redirect localhost
