Nature Notes
Small numbers of a little woodpecker, the wryneck, are migrating through the country. Although it is a woodpecker, the wryneck is not much seen on tree trunks at this time of year because it feeds mainly on ants, picking them up from the ground with rapid movements of its long, wormlike tongue. It is a beautifully mottled, brown bird, the size of a sparrow, and it may sometimes be seen on woodland footpaths. It is famous for its way of violently twisting its head about to ward off predators. This performance is seen at its most dramatic when the wryneck pokes its head out from its tree-trunk nest hole. However, this is practically impossible to see in Britain because it very rarely breeds here now. It was quite a common bird in the UK a century ago. It was well known in ancient Greece as a magic bird and was employed in fertility rites.
