I work in a group that produces high volumes of data (soon to be hundreds of TB) for which we need an archiving solution. Although a NAS solution like Synology would serve our needs, our company's tech department tightly controls devices attached to the network and will not allow us to use a NAS. Therefore, our best option is to use direct-attached storage to a company computer that is attached to the network. However, I am having trouble finding many reputable options that satisfy both high-volume and ease-of-use needs. Here's the breakdown of our needs:
- Storage for ~100 TB, possibly more in the future (either an
enclosure with many bays or an enclosure that supports expansion
units) - Non-proprietary RAID partitioning allowing for recovery in case the
enclosure fails (we previously had this problem with Drobo) - We will not have a dedicated tech person to maintain the system, so
ease-of-use and low-maintenance is a must - I'd prefer to purchase drives separately, but it's not a must
- Our budget is ~$12k
The best I've found so far that satisfy these requirements is LaCie 12big Thunderbolt 3, but I'm skeptical that it comes with drives that may have been manufactured at the same time and place such that they share a similar lifespan. For those who have used LaCie enclosures, what was your experience? What alternatives are out there for us to look into?
