필수 아미노산은 생물(일반적으로 사람)의 몸 안에서 전구 물질로부터 합성할 수 없는 아미노산으로, 음식을 통해 섭취해야 한다.



사람의 필수 아미노산


사람은 일반적으로 다음 여덟 종류의 아미노산을 필요로 한다.


  • 류신

  • 라이신

  • 메티오닌

  • 발린

  • 아이소류신

  • 트레오닌

  • 트립토판

  • 페닐알라닌

그 외에 시스테인과 티로신, 아르기닌, 히스티딘은 유아와 성장기 어린이에게 필요하다. 글루타민, 글리신, 시스테인, 아르기닌, 세린, 티로신, 프롤린은 체내에서 합성이 되기는 하지만, 그 양이 충분치 않아 음식으로 섭취해야 해서 준필수 아미노산이라 부르기도 한다.


필수 아미노산과 비필수 아미노산을 명확히 구분하기는 쉽지 않다. 일부 아미노산은 다른 아미노산으로부터 합성 가능하기도 한다. 황을 포함한 아미노산인 메티오닌과 호모시스테인은 서로 변환이 가능하지만, 둘 다 사람의 체내에서 합성되지는 않는다. 마찬가지로 시스테인은 호모시스테인으로부터 변환할 수는 있으나, 합성되지는 않는다. 편의상 황을 포함한 아미노산은 영양학적으로 등가의 아미노산 군으로 취급되며, 마찬가지로 방향족성 아미노산인 페닐알라닌과 티로신, 요소 회로로 상호 변환이 가능한 아르기닌, 오르니틴, 시트룰린도 하나의 군으로 취급된다.
