건강(健康, 영어: health)은 한마디로 정의하기는 힘드나, 과거에는 건강을 '질병이 없거나 허약하지 않은 상태'라고 흔히 생각하였다. 그러나 질병과 허약이 임상적으로 뚜렷이 나타나는 경우도 있겠지만 건강과 구별이 모호할 때가 많다. 따라서 임상적으로 질병이 발견되지 않았다고 해서 건강하다고 할 수 없으며, 현재 건강하다고 판단된 사람에서도 의학기술이 발전하면 이상이 발견될 수 있을 것이다.[1]


1948년 세계 보건 기구(World Health Organization, WHO)는 헌장에서 건강에 대해 "단순히 질병이나 허약함이 없는 상태가 아니라 신체적, 정신적, 사회적으로 완전한 안녕 상태(Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity)"라고 규정하였다.[2]


건강은 생존의 추구라기보다는 일상 생활에 잘 대처할 수 있는 능력을 말한다. 신체 역량뿐 아니라, 개인적·사회적 대처 능력을 강조하는 입체적이고 긍정적인 개념이다.[3]
